Sheffield United and Burnley turned up the pressure on Championship leaders Leeds with victories on Saturday.
With Leeds at Portsmouth ahead of an early Sunday kick-off, the Blades moved level on points with them after a 1-0 win over Preston, while Burnley beat Luton 4-0 to sit two points further back.
Tyrese Campbell scored for the Blades while Luton, down to 10 thanks to Kal Naismith's 19th-minute red card, gave Burnley a leg-up with a Mark McGuinness own goal (30), before Lyle Foster, Josh Brownhill and Ashley Barnes scored for the dominant Clarets.
Coventry remain in brilliant form as they look to book a play-off spot, with a last-gasp 3-2 win over Stoke their ninth victory in 10.
Two from Victor Torp had them ahead, only for Sam Gallagher’s brace to level on Mark Robins’ return to Coventry with his new club.
But Bobby Thomas had the last word, scoring the winner with 97 minutes on the clock.
An Adam Armstrong penalty saw West Brom beat QPR 1-0 – the Baggies played the second half with 10 men after Darnell Furlong was sent off – while Swansea beat Middlesbrough by the same score thanks to Eom Ji-Sung.
Chris Mepham hit the winner as Sunderland beat Cardiff 2-1 and John Eustace oversaw the downfall of former employers Blackburn as the Derby side he left to join last month prevailed 2-1 at Pride Park, Craig Forsyth and Ebou Adams scoring inside the first seven minutes.
Sheffield Wednesday pushed Plymouth further towards League One with a 3-0 win at Home Park and Josh Coburn headed in an 81st-minute winner as Millwall came from behind to beat Watford 2-1 at Vicarage Road.
Elsewhere, Joao Pedro scored and was sent off within a minute as Hull drew 1-1 at Bristol City – a vital point in their bid to stay up.
