Julian Alvarez put Atletico Madrid back on top of La Liga as his side put away a wasteful Athletic Bilbao to seal a vital 1-0 win.
Alvarez slotted home a sharp finish after a neat assist from fellow substitute Marcos Llorente to settle the clash at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano and nudge his side two points above title rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona.
But Athletic will rue a glut of missed chances, including three attempts that hit the woodwork and at least two dreadful misses in fine positions as their 16-match unbeaten streak in the league came to an end.
Real had earlier succumbed 2-1 at Real Betis to undermine their own hopes of regaining top spot. Brahim Diaz put Carlo Ancelotti's side ahead in the 10th minute before Johnny Cardoso headed home from a corner to level the match.
