Joe O’Connor won through to the semi-finals of the World Open with a thumping 5-1 victory over Shaun Murphy in Yushan.
The 29-year-old, who beat world number one Judd Trump earlier in the competition, eased past Murphy with three centuries in the first four frames and will now face Ali Carter – who was victorious against Barry Hawkins – in the last four.
The world number 39 from Leicester was dominant throughout and made a stunning break of 132 in the penultimate frame to secure passage.
Masters champion Murphy also made a century break to win his single frame but it was not enough to prevent O’Connor from continuing his stunning form.
Carter ensured his place in the semi-finals after staging a superb comeback from 3-1 down to defeat Hawkins 5-4.
Hawkins won three frames in a row to fire himself into the lead but Carter, who won comfortably against David Lilley 5-1 in the previous round, fought back to claim victory and set up a meeting with O’Connor.
Earlier in the day, Zak Surety kept alive his hopes of becoming the lowest-ranked winner of a ranking title in 32 years by beating Tom Ford 5-3.
Surety began the week ranked 89 in the world but after recording six centuries this week – more than any other player in Yushan – is now just two wins from the title, and will play John Higgins in Friday’s semi-finals.
Higgins defeated Pang Junxu 5-0 in his quarter-final.
