This evening's League of Ireland Premier Division match between Shamrock Rovers and Cork City was postponed less than an hour before the planned 6pm kick-off.

Two inspections had been passed earlier in the day following heavy rain in Dublin overnight.

After a showery afternoon, conditions deteriorated later in the day and a third check was deemed needed at 5pm.

The decision was made to call off the game following that inspection.

The Tallaght Stadium pitch hosted two matches this week, including the 120-minute UEFA Conference League clash between the Hoops and Molde on Thursday.

That was followed by the UEFA Nations League clash as Republic of Ireland defeated Turkey on Friday.

A statement from the FAI read: It was with great regret that we were forced into the postponement of this evening's SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division fixture between Shamrock Rovers and Cork City at Tallaght Stadium.

"The pitch was passed playable in the first pitch inspection at 11:15am and with more rain forecast amid changeable weather conditions, it was agreed with both clubs that a second inspection would take place at 4pm.

"The pitch was deemed playable at this juncture and unfortunately a torrential downpour occurred after the second pitch inspection which made the pitch unplayable.

"We would like to thank the match officials and ground staff in trying to get the game to go ahead and we apologise to supporters for the disappointment caused after they made great efforts in travelling to today’s game to support their clubs."

Cork City expressed disappointment at the late nature of the postponement.

"Cork City FC are extremely disappointed that today's game against Shamrock Rovers has been called off so close to kick-off," the club said on social media.

"In particular, we regret the impact it has had on our supporters who had travelled long distances to attend the game.

"The pitch passed inspections at 11am and 4pm, the latter of which was attended by CCFC club personnel, at which point the pitch was playable.

"Unfortunately, a torrential downpour shortly after that made conditions unplayable, despite the best efforts of the grounds staff.

"At all times, the club made clear our preference for the game to go ahead, up to and including being willing to delay kick-off to facilitate this, however this was, regrettably, in vain."

A new date for the fixture will be decided in the coming days.
