Nick Taylor claimed the Sony Open crown in Hawaii having chipped in for an eagle to earn a place in a play-off.

Taylor's eagle sent him into extra holes against playing partner Nico Echavarria, who got up and down from a greenside bunker at the par-five 18th for a birdie to tie the Canadian.

Both players birdied the same hole at Waialae the second time around, Echavarria missing from seven feet as they repeated the hole, leaving Taylor to hole out from around half the distance to secure his fifth PGA Tour title - the last three coming in play-offs.

Taylor and Echavarria both carded closing five-under-par 65s, the Colombian recovering from two opening bogeys with five birdies in six holes around the turn.

Taylor also carded two bogeys in the opening nine but climbed back into contention with his own run of four straight birdies from the eighth.

Having been ahead before Taylor's last-hole heroics, JJ Spaun bogeyed the 17th to finish a stroke behind the leading duo on 15-under-par alongside Germany's Stephan Jaeger, one clear of Eric Cole.

US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley was among a group tied for sixth on 13-under-par.
