Richie Murphy insists his Ulster side will face Leicester with "confidence" despite a number of injury and suspension set-backs for the club.

The 1999 European champions ended a five-game losing streak when they beat Connacht 17-7 in Galway at the end of December.

Injury-hit Ulster were forced to field a young side with Jack Murphy and Rory Telfer getting their first starts, and Wilheim de Klerk making his debut off the bench.

They go to Welford Road bottom of Investec Champions Cup Pool 1 after heavy losses to tournament favourites Toulouse and Bordeaux.

They are further hampered by the six-game ban handed to prop Tom O'Toole, while fellow Ireland internationals Stuart McCloskey (hamstring), Robert Baloucoune (calf), James Hume (knee), Tom Stewart (hamstring), Michael Lowry (thigh) and Jacob Stockdale (hamstring) remain out.

Ireland forwards Iain Henderson and Rob Herring may be available to face the Tigers, who are third in the pool after a win over Sharks and a defeat to Bordeaux.

"We're going there and nobody probably gives us a chance," said Murphy, whose side host Exeter in round four.

"If we want to stay in the competition we need to win our last two games.

"Leicester is a very difficult place to go. They have a massive pack and set piece, and their big back three are all very talented in the air.

"There is a massive test coming in regards to that but we are going there with confidence. We want to try and put our game out in front of them and see where we get to."

Tom O'Toole won't be back until round three of the Six Nations

O’Toole was sent off for a dangerous clear-out on Alex Nankivell during the team’s 22-19 defeat to Munster before Christmas.

He subsequently received a six-match ban, including the first two fixtures of the Guinness Six Nations.

"Tom is bitterly disappointed as are we," said Murphy, who added that the club would be able to clarify a new coaching set-up in the next couple of weeks after being linked with out-going Connacht assistant Mark Sexton.

"It's really difficult. There's a process, we have to trust the process for them to go through.

"I don't think it was a malicious act but we're also conscious that a player's got injured in the process and it is what it is.

"Tom has accepted the sanction and we're going to try and move on from there."

Leicester are fourth in the Premiership after a 28-15 win over Exeter last weekend.

Back row Hanro Liebenberg may be a doubt after injuring an ankle against the Chiefs.
