Matt Doherty has been recalled to the Republic of Ireland squad as injury cover for the final Nations League fixtures against Finland and England.

The Wolves full-back, Everton centre-half Jake O'Brien and Southampton's Ryan Manning have been called up following injuries to the trio of Seamus Coleman, Shane Duffy and Adam Idah.

Doherty's omission was the main talking point from the squad Heimir Hallgrimsson named for the October clashes with Finland and Greece, with the veteran defender again excluded from the original squad named last week.

Doherty has expressed his unhappiness at being dropped, especially when seeing centre-half Andrew Omobamidele playing at right-back in Athens.

When asked about Doherty's reaction last week, Hallgrimsson stood by his decision to not turn to the 32-year-old.

"But listen, all players should feel that they should be playing, they should have the confidence to feel that they should be playing and I would be unhappy if somebody thought that they didn't deserve to play.

"He has a lot of experience that can help us, but like I said, now we want to test other players in these positions, like I told you before the last camp, that we would use these two camps to explore a bit at least, so that's what we're doing."

Everton announced last week that Ireland captain Seamus Coleman was struggling with a hamstring injury. It is unclear what Duffy's issue is, the defender played 90 minutes for Norwich in their 2-0 home defeat to Bristol City on Saturday.

Idah suffered an ankle injury late in Celtic's 3-0 win over Motherwell at the weekend.
