The Premier League fixture between Liverpool and Manchester United will take place this afternoon after two safety checks were successfully passed.

Difficult weather conditions have hit the north of England, impacting travel, including the closure of runways at Liverpool and Manchester airports earlier today.

While the Anfield pitch is fit for the clash, there were concerns over supporters getting to the stadium for the 4.30pm kick-off.

Two safety meetings were held earlier to assess the weather and travel conditions.

A Liverpool statement said: "We thank everyone involved in helping us to get this game on today. If you’re travelling to Anfield then please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there."

Meanwhile at home, the track at Naas was found to be fit for racing following an inspection this morning and the fixture scheduled for today which includes the Grade 1 Lawlor's of Naas Novice Hurdle will go ahead.

Due to Status Yellow weather warning in place for the Kildare area, the situation will continue to be monitored.

The clerk of the course, Brendan Sheridan, said: "We were speaking with Met Éireann this morning and there is going to be some rain, sleet or snow today.

"They are unsure how much we are going to get or what exactly it will be but we are good to go at present and we will continue to monitor the situation going forward."

Despite passing an initial morning inspection, Plumpton's BetGoodwin Sussex National meeting was abandoned due to worsening conditions.

Officials announced a precautionary inspection for 8.30am ahead of one of the track’s most high-profile fixtures of the season due to the forecast of heavy rain overnight.

While 25mm of rain fell, racing was initially given the green light. However, less than two hours later, the meeting was called off due to waterlogging.

The All-Ireland club football semi-finals between Cuala and Coolera/Strandhill at Kingspan Breffni and Errigal Ciaran and Dr Crokes at Laois Hire O'Moore Park were postponed following pitch inspections yesterday.
