Sarah Hawkshaw has been named the new captain of the Ireland Women's hockey team.

The 29-year-old replaces Katie Mullan who stepped down after eight years in the role.

Hawkshaw, who plays club hockey for Railway Union, earned her first cap in 2019 and was part of the Irish squad that made history by qualifying for the Olympics for the first time in 2020.

She also competed in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

Hawkshaw enjoyed a distinguished collegiate career at the University of Massachusetts from 2014 to 2017, earning multiple honours, including All-America recognition in her final two years

"It's obviously a huge honour," she said. "It came with a lot of thought. Gareth (Grundie, Ireland Women's head coach) believed in me and made that known. So it gave me a lot of comfort in accepting the role.

"While I am a new captain, I have experienced lots of different cultures of captaincy at club level and during my time in the USA."
